Dewey Yeah We Do...
The brothers say be careful when you're cross 110th St., but if you go just a half-a-block further, you'll probably be all right. Dewey LoSasso and his wife Dale run a pretty relaxed ship up in the near boonies at North One10, where live music, a kind of throwback cabaret act, happens every Wednesday night. It features the redheaded siren Kimona, who also works Lenny Kravitz's Florida Room (and by work, I mean sing, of course) and her tinkle-tinkle man Rick Harris. They draw a mixed crowd of older early-birders (I hadn't heard anybody order Crown Royal and Ginger since the late sixties), and some younger, hipper, couples and singles who come for the music, yes, but also the drinking and the food. For starters, there's a short specialty cocktail list (I had something with Jack Daniels), created by the unassumingly lovely and lightly wired Amanda, and there was also a $5 Green Tea Mojito available all night (a $5 cocktail is always on the list). There are Dewey's celebuchef goodies, like the “Chips and Dip”, crispy yucca strips with Hot Pepper Crème, Charred Onion Yogurt, and Tomato-Herb Puree, and the Smoked Salmon Croquettas, with “Damn Hot” Guava Sauce, laid out on the bar gratis. (You don't see Michael Schwartz giving away free food. Dewey LoSasso is a man of the people, my friends.) I also managed the Pomegranate BBQ Lamb Spare Ribs, which I've raved about elsewhere ad nauseum (I have a thing for lamb, ribs, and especially, lamb ribs), and something I've been waiting for all my life without knowing it, steak and eggs for dinner. It was another in the beautiful trend of eggs for dinner (the aforementioned M. Schwartz and his Wood-Roasted Double-Yolk Egg, for example), that is quite common in Europe, but just catching on here. This is a flavorful Strip, served with crispy thick potato discs, over a fluffy omelet, along with some fennel slaw. You can skip breakfast the next day, it's that good. One more Green Tea Mojito, and the golden sounds of Kimona the moaner will take you back to a better time; although you're probably not going to find a better place. Relax, and let some jazzy blues nudge you to Dreamland...
